National&Regional 1 (Antisocial movie) Also AGE,RACE&GENDER

Regional and National Identity

  • In the trailer for the movie Anti Social we see London being represented in a negative way. This is as we see it being associated with crime and gangs. For example in the very first few seconds of the trailer we see the use of an extreme close shot of a masked man, as he's wearing a mask it suggests he is engaged in criminal activity as he wants to be anonymous, and we hear non diegetic sound of a news reporter talking about a crime that has been committed, THIS IS USED AS WE USUALLY ASSOCIATE NEWS REPORTS RECALLING CRIMES AS THEY HAPPEN.
  • In just the first 20 seconds alone we see the use of very fast transitions  THIS IS AS CRIME IN VERY FAST AND TENSE SO THE QUICK FRAME CHANGES GIVE A SENSE OF REALISM of scene that shows the chaotic crime that happens in the area with mise en scene such as the police, motorbikes and large sums of money in cash and all of these have connotations of crime and illegal activities. We also see other conventions being used such as a black screen with text that say' "Inspired by true events", which would suggest that what happens in the trailer is based on what actually happened in London AND THIS WOULD'VE BEEN DONE TO SHOW THAT WHAT APPEARS IN THE TEXT ISNT COMPLETELY FICTIONAL

Age and Gender
  • Young people are being represented in a negative way in this movie trailer. This is as we see a close up shot in the opening scene of a young man negotiating about a crime and then a few seconds later we see two young men starting a fire. Mise en scene such as their clothing being hoodies and face masks suggests that they are up to no good. Also the mise en scene location being a derelict train site has connotations of illegal activity, and the young men being there suggest that they are involved
  • Also a bad representation of older men. This is as they are shown to be the ones who influence the crime, we see the use of two shot and reverse camera shots that show the young men being influenced by the old men to partake in the illegal activities.

Events case study 2

The Daily Mirror uses language that make the Conservative party look bad, specifically David Cameron, "Cams bribe will cost every family £1439 a year". This language suggests that David Cameron is ripping people off even though he sounds like he is doing them a favour. Furthermore the fact that they have made the figure red is to grab the readers attention and make them see just how much they will lose is David Cameron is elected, this was quiet clever of the Daily Mirror as red has connotations of danger and it suggests that people should be worried. in Addition to that they have a picture of David Cameron smiling which makes him look smug, and this is what the Daily Mirror would be trying to say.

The Daily Mirror uses informal mode of address, this is as we see a coverline just above this one about the elections that says "How long do you wait before having sex with your new date". This coverline would suggest that the mode of address is informal because the issue is something that you would talk about with friend and h Daily Mirror may also use it as a way to connect with their audience.

I think that the audience of this newspaper would be male and females age 25-40 years old. This is a because of the language that the newspaper uses and their mode of address, also I think that the demographic of the audience would be C/D. Also i think that the audience would be working class people with pro Labour values.

The people in control of the text would be people who have anti conservative values. This is as they are ridiculing David Cameron's policies and trying to portray him as a thief. Also as they use a picture of him smiling its as if they are trying to say that David Cameron isn't ashamed of what he's doing.

Events Case study 1

The Daily Mail newspaper uses language such as "Runaway Jihadi's father is Labour activist", which instantly associates Labour with the current problem with people going to Syria for terrorist activities. This would've been done by Daily Mail as they are a Conservative paper and they would want to make Labour look bad, there fore they use language in their headlines that will represent Labour in a negative light. Also we see a picture of the father of the jihadi with Miliband, which would suggest that they know each other and this makes Labour look like they don't mind being associated with such things and makes them look bad, which is what Daily Mail are aiming to do.
The mode of address is formal, which makes the situation even worse for Labour as it means that their activists' association with the jihadi a big issue. The Daily Mail even uses the names of the jihadi and his father, with an account of events from his father which indicates the mode of address is formal.
I think that the audience would be males and females age 30-45 years old. Also I think that the audience would have the same views as Conservatives and that they would take a preferred reading to what they would be seeing in this text. Additionally I think that the audience would be in the C/D demographic.
I think that people with nationalist viewpoints would be in control of the text. They are very anti Labour and we can tell from the headline that this newspaper is trying to make the Labour party look bad. They express their values within the text by trying to make people see what they think of Labour and how they don't agree with their values or trust their people. The headline an picture alone might make people question Labour and whether they should trust them or not.
I think that this text might have ideologies that try and say that Labour shouldn't be trusted ands that they aren't being transparent as they wouldn't have said this themselves
